Sydney 2000 may have been the best ever and plans are well advanced for London 2012 however locally here in Melbourne Olympic type sports are occurring now, next week and next year!
Special Olympics is a not-for-profit organisation that transforms the lives of people with an intellectual disability and cognitive delay through regular sports participation and competition.
Despite common myths, Special Olympics is not one single event and it’s not just for elite athletes. Instead, dedicated and passionate volunteers provide sports opportunities for all people with an intellectual disability, regardless of their skill level. Victorian State Manager, Kevin O’Byrne says, “Watching athletes develop in their chosen field is very rewarding. Watching them demonstrate courage, achieve their personal best and seeing their joy whilst actively participating is the greatest reward possible”.
Special Olympics Melbourne Southern & Westernport are the local branches of this worldwide movement. Athletes are able to participate in aquatics, athletics, tenpin bowling and basketball to name just a few.
To strengthen and grow the organisation in the two regions, there is a need for greater numbers of volunteers to fulfill coaching, committee and project-based roles. State Board Member, Cameron Glover says, “This is an exciting time for Special Olympics in Victoria. We have a vibrant Board, a new strategic plan and the National Games are being hosted in Melbourne during 2014. Becoming a volunteer at this time promises to be an amazing journey”.
