Hints & tips
Northern Health

Henni Wade, Manager – Volunteer Services, at Northern Health headed the team that won the Award for COVID-19 Support and Connection in 2020.  Here, Henni shares her hints and tips for nominating for a Volunteering Award.

Making a Good Application

  • Take the time to think about how best to highlight the impact the volunteering activities have had on all stakeholders
  • Use resources within your organisation to help improve your application. Because we didn’t have the skills within our immediate team to put together a video, we reached out to other departments in our organisation that helped to improve our submission.  This action in itself was worthwhile as it helped promote the work we had been doing throughout the year within our own organisation
  • Enjoy the experience
  • Continue to document and collect evidence of the work you do throughout the year as it makes it so much easier to pull it all together for reporting and putting together submissions

The Experience

The experience was fantastic for our team because it gave us an opportunity to showcase the work we had been doing.  We didn’t actually think we would even get past the nomination stage so was quite surprised to actually come out a winner in our category!

We don’t go out to seek recognition of our work, but you have to think about the bigger picture.  You get to promote the work of the volunteering community and hopefully your work inspires others.

Part of our role is to celebrate and recognise the wonderful work we are all doing, and these awards give us a platform to do so.
