Training delivered by Dr Mario Peucker (Victoria University)
Conversations about racism aren’t always easy – but they’re necessary. Many people in Victoria continue to face racism in their daily lives, yet recent studies have shown that less than 16% report their experiences. This lack of reporting means racism often goes unchallenged and those affected may miss out on the support they need.
Leaders of volunteers and community organisations can play an important role in changing this. By understanding what racism looks like, how it impacts people, and what support pathways exist, they can help create safer, more inclusive environments.
This session will explore the realities of racism in Victoria and provide practical strategies to assist those affected – whether that’s supporting volunteers within your organisation or community members you work with.
Topics covered
- What is racism and how does it manifest
- Reporting pathways and support services for those who experienced racism
- Discussion: How to assist volunteers and community members who faced racism
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
- Gain a deeper understanding of racial and religious exclusion in Victoria, including how prejudiced attitudes, behaviours and systems intersect (racial literacy).
- Build awareness of existing reporting pathways and support services available to people who experience racism.
- Learn practical ways to support volunteers or community members who have faced racism or exclusion.
- Reflect on how addressing racism contributes to stronger inclusion and belonging within volunteer programs and workplaces.
