Observed annually on December 5th, it started as an international observance mandated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. IVD now serves as an opportunity to acknowledge, thank and shine a light on the important work of volunteers. Their unwavering commitment, selflessness, and generous dedication of their time and skills contributes to making a positive difference in their communities and beyond.

IVD highlights the profound impact of volunteerism in fostering social cohesion, promoting sustainable development, and addressing various challenges faced by communities globally. It also aims to inspire and encourage more people to engage in volunteer work, recognising the transformative power of collective action and solidarity in creating a better world for all.
