With National Volunteer Week coming to a close, it’s a timely reminder that volunteering never really stops – and it doesn’t always look the way we expect it to.
Sometimes it’s a rostered shift or a regular role with a local organisation. But often volunteering shows up more quietly, in everyday acts of care and connection.
- It’s putting your neighbour’s bins out when they’re away.
- Helping with school pick up when someone’s running late.
- Keeping score at the local footy match.
- Dropping off a meal for a new mum.
- Picking up rubbish at the beach.
- Helping a lost pet find its way home.
These moments are just as important. Volunteering, in all its forms, is community care in action.
Data backs this up. Victoria’s State of Volunteering Report (2025) found that nearly 78% of Victorian volunteers now contribute informally, outside formal organisations or structured roles. That figure has risen sharply in recent years, reflecting a shift in how people want to give their time.
At a time when the world can feel heavy, divided or uncertain, these everyday acts matter deeply. They are the threads that hold communities together – not only in times of crisis, but in the small, day-to-day moments that shape how we live alongside one another.
This week has been a chance to recognise volunteers across Victoria, and to broaden our understanding of what volunteering can look like.
National Volunteer Week is for everyone who chooses care.
You may not think of yourself as a volunteer. But if you’ve ever stepped in to help, shown up for someone, chosen kindness, or made your community just that little bit stronger, then you’ve been part of it.
Not because you have to, but because it matters. It’s a quiet culture of care that lives in streets, schools, clubs, parks and neighbourhoods across Victoria. And we see you.
Whether it’s formal or informal, occasional or ongoing, there is no single “right way” to volunteer. To everyone who has shown up this week – and every week – through big efforts and small acts alike: Thank you.
Thank you for the care you show.
For the time you give.
For the simple moments that don’t always get recognised, but make all the difference.
You make our communities stronger, kinder and more connected.
And that’s worth celebrating.
